FAQS
Get answers to common questions about Ecotherapy and our other services.
How do we get started with Ecotherapy?
Ecotherapy with me actually begins online. We will complete an assessment session by video, where I will be asking about what brings you to therapy and getting to understand your struggles and hopes. From there, we will either do some further work online or we will agree the location and plan for our first in-person meeting.
What do we do in Ecotherapy?
We go for a walk! We will be side by side, sometimes walking, sometimes sitting. Sometimes we will focus on what is within you and sometimes on what is around us. We will notice connections between the two and do practices that help to build and strengthen these connections.
What about the weather?
Living in the UK, we can be confident it will be rainy and cold at times. We will still meet on these days. So, it is important to be prepared for this. When we first make contact, I will provide you with a list of recommended clothing. It is your responsibility to come prepared for the weather. If you don’t and I think it might lead to a risk to your health, we will have to cancel the session. Very occasionally, no amount of clothing will be enough to keep us warm! If this has been forecast, we will either reschedule or meet online. If it happens unexpectedly when we are out, we will move to shelter and decide together whether to continue or stop.
I understand that many people might feel a little doubtful about this part of the work but if you give this a go, you might find out just how wonderful it can feel to be outside in the rain.
Is there an evidence base for Ecotherapy?
Yes, there is extensive, peer-reviewed evidence to support therapeutic outdoor-based practices. They have been shown to reduce depression, anxiety, tension, and stress, while improving mood and cognitive functioning. More generally they have been shown to improve sleep, increase energy, and boost immune functioning. They have also been shown to reduce symptoms related to trauma, psychosis, addiction, and ADHD. And ecotherapy does all of this without any contra-indications or negative side effects!
These benefits have been shown to be effective across a range of cultures, social classes, and psychological difficulties. Interestingly, they also seem to have the greatest impact on those who have the poorest wellbeing. The NHS recently completed the largest study ever done on this and found significant improvements in happiness, life satisfaction, and a feeling that life is worthwhile, along with significant decreases in anxiety and depression across all social groups.
I am very happy to provide research articles and other resources on request.
Do you only work outdoors?
No, I am also happy to work exclusively online if meeting outdoors is not possible for you. This will change the form of the work a bit but it can still be very effective. I am a highly trained and experienced ACT and DBT clinician and have provided this online since 2020 in my work for the NHS.
